Atkinson County Middle School has been in existence for a short time. In the past, elementary schools housed PreK through 7 grades, and the high school was the home to students 8th through 12th grade. In August 2010, Atkinson County Middle School opened its doors for the first time. Elementary 6th and 7th-grade students joined together with the 8th-grade students from the high school to emerge into a true middle school setting.

The building currently in use was the 8th-grade wing of the Atkinson County High School prior to the implementation of ACMS. The year before the opening of the Atkinson County Middle School, further construction took place to finish the empty wing which was a shell that was used as storage. Atkinson County Middle School shares the same campus as the Atkinson County High School. ACMS consists of two wings which are separated from ACHS by a hallway, a library, and administrative offices.

In the summer of 2023, new construction began on two classrooms on the end of F Wing, along with more student restrooms.
